In the last decade, voice enabled warehousing has quickly grown to be an industry best practice. Voice technology offers numerous advantages over conventional methods such as paper lists or wireless terminals. Rather than communicating visually via paper or handheld devices, voice instructions are passed on through a headset.

Voice technology uses speech recognition and speech synthesis to allow workers to communicate with the Warehouse Management System (WMS). Warehouse operatives use a wireless, wearable computer with a headset and microphone to receive instructions by voice, and verbally confirm their actions back to the system. The wearable computer, or voice terminal, communicates with the Warehouse Management Software via a radio frequency (RF) local area network (LAN).

Voice technology enables workers to perform activities hands-free and heads-up (eyes-free). By freeing the operator’s hands to handle the stock items, voice picking ensures ergonomic and efficient execution of tasks. Without the need to handle wireless data terminals and paper lists eliminated, the order picker can focus entirely on retrieving the required items.

Instead of the time-consuming approach of manually entering data or the use of scanners, the instructions to and responses from the operator are communicated by voice. Delays caused by the operator having to stop retrieving items in order to enter data into a device are a thing of the past. The operation is now streamlined, thus greatly increasing productivity and throughput.

While traditional solutions such as RF scanning, labels, and pick-to-light are also widely used, voice enablement has given warehouses the necessary boost towards streamlining processes, improving operational efficiency, and reducing errors resulting in huge cost savings.

Voice solution doesn't just mean improved efficiency and cost cutting. It means that your warehouse remains on the cutting edge of technology while continuing to compete with the rest of the industry.
